Black Widow Trailer Is Here, Marvel’s Phase 4 Begins

Marvel Studios’ Black Widow trailer is finally here. We’ve got our first look at Scarlett Johannson’s first solo movie as Natasha Romanoff in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is something that has been a very long time coming.

Scarlett Johannson first made her debut in the MCU back in 2010’s Iron Man 2. In the years since, she’s appeared in The AvengersCaptain America: The Winter SoldierAge of UltronCivil WarInfinity War and Avengers 4. All of which have gone on to find huge success at the box office. By the time Natasha gets her solo movie, the character will have been a part of this universe for an entire decade. And yet, it took until now to get this project going. Though, this does certainly seem to be one of those better late than never situations.

Luckily, during SDCC, after months of rumors and reports, Marvel Studios finally confirmed that Black Widow is coming our way. It will be the first movie in the Marvel Phase 4 lineup, which says a lot about Marvel’s confidence in the project and the character. Following up Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home is no small task. The cast also includes Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Malena, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexi, O.T. Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason and Florence Pugh (Midsommar) as Yelena Belova.

Cate Shortland (Berlin SyndromeLore) is in the director’s chair. While much remains secretive, what we know for sure is that the movie will be a prequel to the events of Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. That explains how Natasha will be able to headline her own solo flick, despite her grim fate on Vormir. We also know that Taskmaster will be the main villain. This had been heavily rumored for some time, but was also confirmed at SDCC. In terms of the overall timeline, this will take place after the events of Captain America: Civil War. So Nat will still be a seasoned Avengers vet by the time she takes on the Marvel Comics baddie. It’s also been said that the movie will introduce multiple Black Widows into the MCU.

Other movies coming down the pipeline in phase 4 include EternalsShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder. Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow in Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller Black Widow-the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour as Alexei aka The Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz as Melina. Directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige, Black Widow hits U.S. theaters on May 1, 2020.
