Star Wars: The Clone Wars “The Bad Batch” Recap SPOILERS

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is finally back! The award-winning continuation of the saga, returns on Disney+ for its epic conclusion.  After countless petitions and outcries from the fans, the ending to the longest running Star Wars television series is finally here.

The Bad Batch” actually appeared as an unfinished episode of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series at Celebration Anaheim and was released later on StarWars.com. It is the first in a four-part story arc focusing on a ragtag unit of clone commandos, Clone Force 99 aka The Bad Batch. With the Republic on a losing streak, Captain Rex fears the Separatists are using stolen data to help predict the Grand Army’s every move. As the threat of defeat looms, Rex teams up with experimental Clone Force 99, also known as the Bad Batch. Together, they embark on a high-risk mission behind enemy lines to uncover the truth behind the Separatist victories.

Recap

The first episode picks up with the Republic campaign on Anaxes. Things are not going well for the Republic as the Separatists capture the main production facility for the Republic’s battle fleet. Commander Cody and Captain Rex have a theory as to how the droid army has been able to predict and counter their every move so far. Rex developed an algorithm to analyze the usual Republic strategies and develop corresponding responses to counter the army’s performance weaknesses.

From the latest results from battle Rex had concluded that somehow the algorithm has fallen into enemy hands. Only two other people knew about the algorithm’s existence and layout, the late ARC troopers Fives and Echo. Because Echo’s body was never recovered during the secret mission to the Citadel, Rex has reason to believe Echo must have fallen into the enemy’s hands and been coerced into surrendering the program.

Cody and Rex are assign to infiltrate the Separatists’ planetary cyber center to find and recover the algorithm. With the likelihood that the Separatist know all of the clones strategies, Cody suggests calling in a crack commando force squad he worked with before to assist in the job. Clone Force 99, informally known as the “Bad Batch” which consists of defectively born clones who underwent unique and “desirable” mutations.

After some setbacks in the mission Rex and the “Bad Batch” are able to infiltrate into the computer system and discover the algorithm. The strange thing is the algorithm is not stored inside the center’s memory banks but is instead broadcast from Skako Minor. After further digging, the clones manage to receive an audio signal which sounds like Echo’s cloned number.

Thoughts

While this was not necessarily a new episode it was enjoyable to see this episode in its completed format.  Since the cancellation of The Clone Wars, Dave Filoni had given us pieces of how this series ended.  It has been a nice surprise that the original concept for the ending of this series hasn’t  changed all that much.  For the casual Star Wars fan this last season will be full of excitement and surprise.  For those of you who are die hard fans the stories and plot lines won’t be that surprising.  Even though I know how this story will end, I am really excited to finally see the finished product of this series.

Now it is the end of the historic Clone Wars, as the forces of darkness have amassed great power in their bid to transform the Republic into the Galactic Empire. In the conflict’s final days, clonetroopers specialize for the dangerous missions ahead, Ahsoka Tano confronts life outside of the Jedi Order, and a familiar menace returns to wreak havoc. The explosive final chapters of the CloneWars chronicle the end of a major era in Star Wars history.
