Taylor Swift Calls Out Netflix Over “Sexist” ‘Ginny & Georgia’ Joke

Netflix’s new series Ginny & Georgia drew the ire of Taylor Swift fans over the weekend as they objected to the series featuring a joke about the superstar singer-songwriter’s love life.

As shown in screengrabs shared widely on social media, the final episode of the first season of the streamer’s Gilmore Girls-esque mother-daughter series features a moment where single mom Georgia (Brianne Howey) asks her daughter Ginny (Antonia Gentry) about the status of a recent relationship and Ginny fires back with a Swift response.

“What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift,” Ginny tells her mom. The phrase “RESPECT TAYLOR SWIFT” was trending on Twitter on Sunday evening.

And on Monday, the first day of Women’s History Month, Swift also objected to what she called a “lazy, deeply sexist joke.”

“Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back,” Swift tweeted. “How about we stop degrading hard working women by defining this horse shit as FuNnY. Also, @netflix after Miss Americana this outfit doesn’t look cute on you. Happy Women’s History Month I guess.”

Swift has repeatedly objected to jokes about her love life and even satirized the commentary about her active dating with her hit “Blank Space,” in which she sings about having a “long list of ex-lovers.”

And the criticism of her love life was included in Swift’s Netflix documentary Miss Americana, chronicling the star in recent years as she finds her political voice. Among other moments, Miss Americana includes clips of commentators talking about her “going through guys like a train.”

As for Ginny & Georgia, the YA dramedy from creator Sarah Lampert dropped on Netflix on Wednesday, with The Hollywood Reporter‘s Inkoo Kang calling it “winsome but uneven” in her review.

A similar trend of “RESPECT SELENA GOMEZ” popped up after Peacock’s Saved By the Bell reboot mocked the kidney transplant received by the pop star, who’s also one of Swift’s closest friends.

Peacock apologized for the episode and donated to Gomez’s lupus charity.
