James McBride’s ‘Deacon King Kong’ Unveiled as New ‘Oprah’s Book Club’ Selection (Video)

*Oprah Winfrey today announced her latest selection for Oprah’s Book Club is “Deacon King Kong” by James McBride.

The book club describes it as a witty, moving novel that brings to vivid life a cast of characters living in south Brooklyn in September 1969. As the story deepens, it becomes clear that the lives of these characters — caught in the tumultuous swirl of 1960s New York — overlap in unexpected ways. McBride shows us that not all secrets are meant to be hidden, that the best way to grow is to face change without fear, and that the seeds of love lie in hope and compassion.

This is McBride’s first novel since his National Book Award-winning “The Good Lord Bird.”
