Actress Sophie Newydd has died at the age of 24, her family announced.

The obituary posted online did not mention the cause of death, but indicated that Newydd died on April 14.

The obituary read:
“Sophie was a kind and trusting girl. This often made her vulnerable to exploitation by others. She wrote and drew passionately, and much of her artwork reflects her depth and the pain she experienced. Many of her writings and drawings are roadmaps of her struggles and trauma.

Even with these maps, diagnoses, and self-disclosure, those closest to her, as well as the therapists, police officers, and others who tried to help her, are deeply saddened that their efforts were unable to save her. She repeatedly said she would take matters into her own hands, and she was driven by internal impulses to refuse treatments that might have saved her life.”

Newid made her screen debut at the age of six, starring in the romantic drama “Bella,” about a mysterious chef who spends a day with a waitress in crisis.

She then went on to star in “Law & Order,” the films “And Then Came Love,” Noah Baumbach’s “Margot at the Wedding,” and “New York City Serenade.” She played the daughter of Gael García Bernal and Michelle Williams’ characters in the 2009 film “Mammoth,” and appeared as a young girl in the 2014 film “Noah,” starring Russell Crowe.

Her final screen appearance was in 2015, in an episode of the reality show “What Would You Do?.”

The obituary concluded with the moving words: “Sophie. A life cut short. May it not have been in vain. May we all learn from her short life on this earth and become better. Yes, we must all protect our children and become better.”

Gibson told TMZ on Tuesday: “We are in a state of deep sadness and mourning. All I can say is that her acting career was short, but it was a very happy one. She was never a child star, and she never experienced anything harmful on those productions. She was always safe on the sets. I hope she can rest in peace now.”

Referring to the cause of her death, Gibson added: “From what I know, she was on drugs and was a very thin young woman.”

“She was with other people when she died. I don’t know who they were. There’s an investigation underway. The autopsy results are out yet. They said it’ll take 6 to 8 weeks. So I can’t say anything for sure,” Gibson added.
