Broadway star Nick Cordero out of coma, ‘very long road’ ahead

Broadway star Nick Cordero, who has been critically ill with Covid-19 complications for a number of weeks, is out of his medically induced coma, but his wife Amanda Kloots has said there is “a very long road” ahead.

The 41-year-old Canadian actor was admitted to hospital in Los Angeles in late March with what was originally thought to be pneumonia but later tested positive for Covid-19. He has suffered two mini strokes and undergone the amputation of one of his legs and the insertion of atemporary pacemaker.

US entertainment trade website Deadline reports that in an Instagram Stories video on Tuesday, Kloots shared some good news about her husband’s condition.

“I asked the doctor today, ‘Can we say he is awake?'” she said. “‘He is awake’, said the doctor.”

Kloots continued: “Nick is so weak right now that even opening his eyes and closing his eyes takes all his energy.

“He is extremely weak, so weak that he can’t close his mouth.

“But he is following commands which means his mental status is coming back,” said Kloots.

But she added: “This is a long road, a very long road.”

Earlier this month, Scrubs star Zach Braff wrote on Instagram: “I’m very close to this because one of my best friends in the world, Nick Cordero, and his wife and baby have been living in my guest house for seven months as they were house-shopping in LA to make the move out here.

“Nick’s a big Broadway star and Amanda [Kloots], his wife, is a trainer and they fell in love with LA. So, they went home to pack up their things and he got Covid-19 when they did that, and he has it worse than anyone I’ve heard of who hasn’t passed away.”

Braff added: “My point is that most people are lucky enough to not have this land in their backyard and also I think a lot of people are still under the impression that this is only really dire for seniors, but I’m here to tell you that a very, very healthy 41-year-old friend of mine is fighting for his life.”
