Charlize Theron’s Oscars Hairstyle Has a Hidden Surprise in the Back

Since Charlize Theron started growing out her iconic bowl haircut, she’s had a pretty consistent roster of hairstyles. Her icy blonde hair that barely reaches the nape of her neck is often swept to the side in a deep part, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting every time she appears at an event. Her look at the 2020 Oscars is proof, thanks to the work of her go-to stylist, Adir Abergel.

Abergel, who also cut Saoirse Ronan’s brand-new bangs for the red carpet, styled Theron’s hair in its signature side swoop but added a surprise accessory that you can only see from the back of her head. “We added an incredible detail with two matching extensions on either side, bound with black thread and attached together in the back in a half-moon,” he tells Allure.

Abergel is no stranger to using thread in creative ways. He’s used a similar technique on Ronan multiple times this awards season. But the inventive threading is the cherry on top of the stylist’s process.

“I prepped Charlize’s hair by applying Virtue Labs Healing Oil from roots to ends, and I mixed a little bit of Virtue Labs Unfrizz Cream to the ends to seal and create shine,” he explains.

After briefly rough-drying the actress’s hair with a Dyson dryer, he parted it on the side and continued drying it using the dryer’s wide, flat diffuser. That’s where the elaborate hair wrap came in.

Theron might be nominated for her performance in Bombshell, but she and Abergel sought to share another nomination entirely: the award for the most versatile short hairstyling, of course.
