Dad missed his wedding after scooter crash on stag do left him in five-week coma

A dad missed what would have been his wedding after a horror moped crash on his stag do left him in a coma.

Ashley Hickman, 32, suffered critical head injuries after careering off a road in Indonesia.

It is understood he drove through an oil spill and was flung off the scooter days before his big day.

Grief-stricken fiancée Tam Matthews, 27, was at her final dress fitting when she was told the devastating news.

She flew to Bali to be beside the dad-of-one’s side.

Ashley’s sister Brooke Parker, of Queensland, Australia, has also told of her grief.

“He is slowly progressing and is now in the post traumatic amnesia stage and has a long journey ahead,” she said today after Ashley woke from the five-week coma.

“We’re just incredibly grateful he’s still here today.

“He has a very long way to go before he’s independent again and has a couple more surgeries but he is ticking small goals off daily.”

While Mr Hickman had travel insurance, his policy didn’t cover his medical expenses as he didn’t meet the requirements of having an international driver’s licence and an Australian motorbike licence.

Friends were forced to scramble together thousands of dollars for emergency surgery.

It’s believed medical fees will exceed $100,000 (Australian Dollars), the equivalent of around £55,000.

Writing on the Go Fund Me page , Brooke said no one would wish the ordeal “on their worst enemy”.

Speaking previously, heartbroken fiancée Tam said: “It really puts things into perspective, I was so stressed about the little details, the eyelashes, the nails, the table settings and now I don’t care.

“It’s been a really tough couple of days.”

“You wouldn’t wish this on your worst enemy. We just want him back in Australia.”
