Patricia Arquette weighed in on Ricky Gervais’ trans humor attempts before her 2020 Golden Globes welcoming concert.
The actor said the controversy surrounding Gervais’ recent tweets about trans people “is a really important conversation for everyone.”
“Obviously, I have very strong feelings about protecting the trans community,” she told Variety at the annual LA BAFTA party on Saturday, January 4.
“I don’t think anything funny is to make fun of the trans community. They are really persecuted, so I don’t think it’s funny. “

Patricia’s brother was the late trans activist actor Alexis Arquette, who died at the age of 47 in September 2016.
Alexis went out as a trans woman in 2006 and would have had a more fluid vision of her sex in her later days, her brother David Arquette signaling that she qualified as a “gender suspect”.
Patricia recently paid tribute to Alexis at the 2019 Emmy Awards, where she passionately advocated for the improvement of trans rights.
“In my heart, I’m so sad,” she said, accepting the award for best supporting actress.
“I’m in mourning every day of my life, Alexis, and I’ll be the rest of my life for you until we change the world for you, until we change the world so that trans people are not persecuted. And give them jobs. “

Patricia made an equally emotional call to arms at the Golden Globes, where she was honored for her work on The Act.

Gervais was called upon to resign before the Golden Globes on Sunday evening (January 5) after making a series of disrespectful comments about trans people.
The comedian wrote a number of tweets, aligning himself with author JK Rowling, who herself was faced with a setback on her support for a woman whose employment contract was not renewed due to his anti-trans “critical sexist opinions”
Gervais wrote that the trans allies had “created a dogma with their own blasphemy laws”.
He also responded to a parody of a trans woman: “These horrible biological women can never understand what it must be like for you to become a charming lady so late in life.
“They take their girly privileges for granted. Win in women’s sport and have your own toilet. Well, that’s enough. “
Later, Gervais insisted that he was only “playing” with the story, explaining: “I also make jokes about AIDS, cancer, famine and the Holocaust. These things also do a little harm. But the jokes don’t. “
