Wendell Pierce brands negative press around Meghan Markle ‘the ugly side of human nature’
Wendell Pierce has deemed the negative media attention around Meghan Markle the ‘ugly side of human nature’, highlighting her accomplishments against the scrutiny. The 55-year-old actor played Megan’s on-screen father Robert Zane in Suits, which came to an end after nine seasons earlier this year. Meghan, 38, departed the show in April 2018 ahead of her marriage to Prince Harry, and recently spoke out for the first time about her struggles in the spotlight while pregnant and adjusting to Royal status. Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Wendell, who plays CIA officer James Greer in Amazon’s Jack Ryan, explained how he chooses not to focus on the negative press Meghan receives. ‘There are people that don’t have our best interests at heart,’ Wendell said. ‘That’s the ugly side of human nature and you try to not focus on that — you try to focus on the good side of human nature. ‘It’s the sort of yard stick I use when playing James Greer in Jack Ryan. People have that negative reaction to seeing anything about the intelligence agency, about the CIA, but they’re making an assumption. What we’ve tried to do is speak to the better part of humanity and how that influences what we do.
‘It’s the same thing with Meghan. I choose to focus on her patronage of the arts, of the charities, of the abused women, of underserved communities. ‘She was just at a charity in South Africa with a surfing school for at risk kids — taking the natural world as a connection for something that could actually help these kids make that the next step in their lives to a better future. ‘I choose to focus on that. The negative press is just an example of the ugly side of human nature, and she’s actually showing us when they take the low road, she takes the high road. By demonstrating that, she shows the better part of ourselves.’ He added: ‘That’s a real part of our humanity and she’s showing you how to deal with it. So actually, by example she’s doing really well.’
Wendell has also invited Meghan to see him perform on the West End in play Death Of A Salesman, which is preparing for a second run at the Piccadilly Theatre. ‘Since I’ve been here in London doing a play, I’ve commented with her and she sends word back,’ Wendell said. ‘She was having a baby for the first half of the year, so hopefully I’ll see her on the second half of my run.’ Along with a West End play, Wendell is gearing up for the second season of Jack Ryan, which also stars John Krasinski and newcomers Michael Kelly and Noomi Rapace.
