Miley Cyrus’s ‘Mother’s Daughter’ Music Video Is One Big Political Statement
@Alyssa Bailey
Miley Cyrus just released her celeb-packed “Mother’s Daughter” video, and it is one of her most bluntly political music videos ever. Cyrus incorporates feminist messages throughout the video, from “virginity is a social construct” to “not an object” (i.e., don’t objectify women), which flash on the screen.
But she doesn’t do it alone: before the video’s 9 A.M. premiere, Cyrus teased all the celebrities appearing in it. Skateboarder Lacey Baker, Cyrus’ mother Tish Cyrus, transgender model Casil McArthur, dancer Amazon Ashley, Vandela, transgender model Aaron Philip, actress Angelina Duplisea, and actress Mela Murder are among the stars in it.
Cyrus’ song “Mother’s Daughter” is her first single off of her new EP She Is Coming. She announced the music video’s release yesterday, writing, “@almacyber [Alma] & I wrote a bad ass feminist anthem called Mother’s Daughter and I am dropping the music video tomorrow 7/2! Beware it’s the SHIT just like all the bad ass women starring alongside muah!”
Lyrically, Cyrus’s song truly is just that. Cyrus sings, “Oh my God, she got the power / Well, look at her, she got the power / Don’t fuck with my freedom / I came up to get me some / I’m nasty, I’m evil / Must be something in the water or that I’m my mother’s daughter.”
The release of Cyrus’ music video comes just days after she performed at Glastonbury. Even then, Cyrus posted a shoutout to her mother. “I’m a lot of things, ever changing, but always have been and always will be my Mother’s Daughter & damnproud,” she wrote in her tweet, adding the hashtags “#Strong #Smart #Driven #BadAss #NoGreaterLove”
