Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose raspy voice powered ’80s hits “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” has died at 75. A statement on her website said she died unexpectedly in a hospital in Portugal from the illness she was being treated for, and her family asked for privacy.
Her final months
In May, Tyler had emergency intestinal surgery in Faro, Portugal. Her team first said she was recovering, then announced the next day that doctors had placed her in an induced coma to help her heal. Last month, her team said she was still very unwell in intensive care but improving. Her summer shows were canceled or postponed, and her team had hoped she could perform again in the fall.
From Welsh pubs to worldwide fame
Born Gaynor Sullivan on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Neath, Wales, Tyler got her start after placing second in a local talent contest in 1969. She sang in pubs and clubs across South Wales before releasing her first single, “My! My! Honeycomb,” in 1976.
Her career exploded in 1983 with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” one of the best-selling singles of all time, with more than six million copies sold. Its album, Faster Than the Speed of Night, debuted at No. 1 in the U.K. and reached the top five in the U.S., selling more than a million copies there.

Remembering Bonnie
Few voices are as instantly recognizable as Tyler’s. Her power ballads have been sung at weddings, karaoke nights and on countless road trips for more than four decades, and she was still recording and touring into her 70s. That legacy will outlast her.
