After All The Hype, Hilarious Memes, Babyface And Teddy Riley Press ‘Reset’ On Beat Battle That Broke IG
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/AP) – After a weekend of hype and hilarious memes that nearly broke IG — hashtag babyfacevsteddyriley if you’ve been on another planet – the legendary Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds and Teddy Riley did a major reset Monday, a much-anticipated rematch of their Instagram Live faceoff.
After a few minutes of digital housekeeping, the battle began, reconfirming for half a million fans and followers that these two are the original ‘R & B, New Jack City, whip-appeal, done produced everybody and some you never knew’ masters.
And everybody showed up — from Hallie Berry, to Issa Rae and Toni Braxton, as they played their hits and classics from the 1980s and ’90s – hearts were just overflowing.
Babyface delivered a live rendition of “When Can I See You.”
The set was peppered with mutual praise.
“You brought New Jack Swing to us all … I’m honored to be in here with you man,” Babyface said referring to the style of music Riley popularized in the 80s and 90s.
“You inspired me,” Riley told Babyface.
Last weekend, more than 400,000 followers tuned in on to hear the pair duke it out in another of a series of Instagram Live beat battles, after contests with greats Timbaland vs. Swizz Beatz, and T-Pain vs. Lil Jon.
Saturday night, Babyface’s setup was simple, lockdown style, but Riley was set up for a concert, a recipe for disaster, especially during a COVID-19 quarantine that demands that ‘less is better.’
On a more serious note, the battle had already been postponed from its April 12 date, after Babyface was diagnosed with COVID-19. The Grammy-winning singer-producer, 61, last week said he and his family — who also tested positive –were recovering.
