Jonathan Van Ness Is the First ‘Non-Female’ Star to Be on a Cosmopolitan UK Cover in 35 Years

Jonathan Van Ness should be used to making history everywhere he goes — but he’s getting emotional about this particular achievement. Van Ness is the first non-female Cosmopolitan UK cover in 35 years, and he’s sharing how proud he is on Instagram. And of course, his Queer Eye co-stars are right there cheering him along.

Van Ness posted his Cosmo UK cover to Instagram on Monday with the caption, “My body is ready 💗 1st non Female cover star of @cosmopolitanuk in 35 YEARS 🏳️‍🌈.” Tan France, fellow star of Netflix’s Queer Eye, chimed in right away with his congratulations:

“THIS IS SO AWESOME, JACKAAAAAYYY!!! I’M OVER THE MOON FOR YOU, AND YOU LOOK AMAZING! ❤️,” France wrote.  “LOOK AT OUR LITTLE BABY!!!” added Queer Eye‘s Bobby Berk.

The Cosmopolitan UK interview describes Van Ness’s cover style as “pre-limousine prom queen meets sexy cult leader” — and whatever you think of that, you must admit Van Ness looks fabulous. The Queer Eye star is promoting his new memoir, Over The Top, which discusses his sexual abuse as a child, his struggles with substance abuse, and his HIV status.

Van Ness, who, in an old video of him joking about Bernie Sanders and Ronald Reagan’s hair was resurfaced on Twitter. In it, the star jokes that Reagan — who famously ignored the AIDS crisis — at least “put gel in his hair.”

“If I saw the headlines of ‘Queer Eye star reveals devastating HIV diagnosis’ and then, two days later, you see this one-minute video of me cracking jokes about Ronald Reagan’s treatment of people living with HIV, I would hate me too,” Van Ness says of the backlash to that video. “But they also don’t understand that I’m someone who is living with HIV; that that was the first press tour I’d ever done; that I’m also a comedian who makes jokes out of stuff because if I didn’t make jokes about it, I wouldn’t be able to get out of bed in the morning.”

The point Van Ness is trying to make, above all else? “Henny, I don’t know how to fix the world!” he says. But with every step of getting his voice out there and improving representation for marginalized people, he’s more than willing to try.
