It’s national donut day!

Syracuse, N.Y. — For many across the country it may symbolize breakfast on the go, but Friday, June 5th highlights the past wartime value of donuts as it is national donut day!

According to the National Day Calendar, the Salvation Army created the day in 1938 to honor not the sweet treat but the women who served them to soldiers in WWI.

These ladies were called the Salvation Army Lassies.

They used the treats to boost the morale of the troops.

Now, the round fried or baked dough is to boost the morale of those craving a sweet fix.

Donuts come glazed, iced, cream-filled, or topped with just about anything you can imagine.

This year Dunkin’ delivered coffee and donuts to the front-line staff at Food Bank of Central New York in light of the national day.

And Friday, YOU can swing by your local Dunkin’ to grab a free classic donut of your choice with the purchase of a beverage at participating restaurants. .
