Nick Jonas Joins The Voice as Coach for Season 18 in Spring 2020
The Jonas brother joins returning coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend.
“The Voice” has lured in another of today’s hottest artists as coach with the announcement that Nick Jonas will be occopying one of the swivel chairs in the show’s upcoming 18th season in the spring of 2020.
Jonas is slated to join returning coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend. Shelton’s girlfriend Gwen Stefani, who returned as a coach for the fall cycle, will not be returning in the spring.
“I’m so excited to be a part of ‘The Voice’ family,” Jonas said in a statement from the network. “It’s such an awesome group of individuals, and I can’t wait to help these artists really build and hone in to find their unique voices.”
On Monday evening, Jonas took to his Instagram to share the news directly with his fans. “The big news is finally out,” he said. “I am so excited!”
Then turning his attention to his new co-workers — and competition — Jonas said, “While I’m excited to work with you guys, I’m coming for you! I’m hoping for a Season 1 win for Team Nick and the chance to work with some amazing talent. I can’t wait and I just want to say thank you to everyone that made it happen.”
Back in June, Jonas appeared as a musical guest, alongside his brothers, on NBC’s songwriting reality competition series “Songland.” The song they ultimately chose, Able Heart’s “Greenlight,” quickly went to the top of the iTunes charts. So Nick has some familiarity with both the network and musical reality shows on it.
Now, he’s looking to show off his eye for talent and mentoring in his new role as the latest coach on the network’s highest-rated reality show, “The Voice.” And while Kelly Clarkson appears to have stepped up as Blake Shelton’s top sparring partner in the absence of Adam Levine, Nick has some experience with sibling rivalry and bickering, so he might be willing to jump right into that fray.
Ellen DeGeneres had to get in on the action during the Jonas Brothers appearance on her show. During the time of their taping, Nick had yet to break the big news, so Ellen warned him that she was going to go ahead and do it for him if he didn’t.
And so she did, by sharing a clip of his new coworkers welcoming him to the show, or in the case of Blake Shelton, mildly threatening him.
“I’m going to have to look through the rules, because this is my TV show. I’m not sure you’re even old enough to be a Coach on ‘The Voice,'” Blake told the 27 year old. “But I’m certain that you’re gonna get your butt kicked, buddy.”
After that, Kelly and John were much more warm and welcoming, just so long as Nick agreed to join them in their mission on the show “to destroy Blake Shelton!”
And it looks like Nick is going to fit right in, as he almost immediately started trash-talking Blake … all the way up until Ellen had her own “Blake Shelton” pop out from behind him and scare the living daylights out of him. And yes, it was even better in slo-mo.
The good news for Jonas fans is that he’s surely to at least perform with the Jonas Brothers on the show, and he may even have Joe and/or Kevin on as mentors at some point throughout the season.
Plus, as “The Voice” sometimes features duets or family members competing together, who’s going to be more experienced and familiar with that particular dynamic than the guy who launched his career that way, and has recently come full circle with the Jonas Brothers hugely-successful reunion.
“The Voice” airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
