Summer TV is ending on a high note, with a new DC superhero drama, the return of a sharp friend-group comedy and a Netflix period romance you’ll want to finish in one weekend. Here’s what to watch this week.
On TV
Lanterns (HBO): DC’s Green Lantern Corps gets a grounded, detective-style treatment. Kyle Chandler plays veteran Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre plays his recruit, John Stewart. The pair investigate a suspicious shooting in small-town Rushville, Nebraska, where they clash with the local sheriff (Kelly Macdonald). It’s a good fit for viewers who like crime mysteries more than big CGI battles. Where to watch: New episodes Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
Adults season 2 (FXX): Created by Tonight Show writers Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, this hangout comedy follows a group of post-college twentysomethings sharing a house. Season 2 brings guest stars including Zosia Mamet, Raven-Symoné and Gaten Matarazzo. Where to watch: Premieres Thursday, Aug. 27, at 9 p.m. ET on FXX with two episodes, streaming on Hulu.

My Brilliant Career (Netflix): This Australian series is based on Miles Franklin’s 1901 novel, which was also a 1979 film. Philippa Northeast plays Sybylla Melvyn, a spirited aspiring writer who is sent from her rural hometown to live with relatives. She’s supposed to find a husband, but she’s far more interested in her writing, and a love triangle follows. If you loved Little Women or Bridgerton, start here. Outer Banks season 5 (Netflix): The Pogues are back for the hit teen adventure’s fifth and final season. Where to watch: Netflix.
Worth revisiting
Heroes: After Hayden Panettiere’s death at 36 in August, many fans are going back to her breakout role as indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet. The 2006 NBC drama was an ambitious superhero show years before Marvel took over TV. Where to watch: All four seasons on Netflix, or free with ads on Tubi.
